In 2018, I took a one-year sabbatical to Spain, which turned into a four-year personal and professional growth journey around the globe. I have no idea where I will be in the next few years or if I’ll even live again in my country. As a type-A person, this would have bothered me years ago. Travel has taught me many invaluable lessons, such as to live in the moment. I am sure that traveling has been one of my greatest teachers, and I’d love to share a few ways it has taught me below with you.

  1. Self-Reflection
Traveling and experiencing other cultures naturally pushes you to examine your way of being and living while comparing and contrasting it to the culture around you. Through encountering new food, people, and places, you will learn more about your likes, dislikes, values, and priorities. It can help you reframe your mind or, better yet, your life. If you are feeling stuck or ready to grow, I recommend booking a few-week trip abroad or, better yet, moving abroad for some time.
  2. Becoming Brave/Taking More Risks
I never imagined myself living alone in Spain, Thailand, or Mexico and traveling as much as 40 hours during a pandemic on five flights having to navigate the world changes. I moved to a country and continent I had never visited on a one-way ticket with the last of my savings. If that is not brave, I am not sure what is. I knew that if I wanted to continue learning and grow, I needed to step outside my zone of comfort. Whether it’s as simple as learning to navigate the public transportation system or moving somewhere you’ve never been, these risks make you feel more confident in yourself and resilient in everyday circumstances.
  3. Making Diverse Friends
Through international travel, you will make friends from all over the world who share their perspectives, culture, and knowledge with you. This is powerful! We can always learn from others, and traveling facilitates this beautifully.

4.Being Present
It’s easy to be distracted by routine and everyday life. Traveling allows us to see the world with fresh eyes, overcome challenges, and fully embrace what is happening NOW.

I hope this post has reminded the value of travel and experiences abroad. Not sure where to go next, or thinking about teaching abroad, I’d love to help support you through the entire process. Feel free to book a 15 minute call with me to discuss your goals and see how I can help you travel, teach, and thrive abroad.
